The Columbia River Gorge is a beautiful place, and many people want to move to the area to be a part of the local communities.  The larger towns within the Scenic Gorge area are Hood River, White Salmon, and The Dalles; smaller communities such as Cascade Locks and Mosier also add to the flavor of the Gorge.  Many consider Troutdale the entrance to the Gorge.   Here are resources from a “old” local gal for anyone planning on moving to the Gorge or interested in a second home in the area.  Â
Where is Hood River?
The City of Hood River parallels the Columbia River, and is nestled in the scenic Gorge region of Oregon.  Across the Hood River Bridge are the small towns of Bingen and White Salmon, Washington.  Hood River is located an hour east of Portland and the Portland Int’l Airport.  (View of Hood River)
Industries in Hood River? Hood River is home to a diverse group of local industries ranging from technology software companies to fruit packing houses.  Tourism, healthcare, timber industry and government positions are some of the larger employers in the area.  Recreational sports draw thousands of people every year to the Columbia River Gorge, creating lots of tourism opportunities.  There are many entrepreneurs that call the Gorge home, and as a by-product there are a lot of small business owners thriving in the Gorge. What is Popular in Town? There is never a dull moment in “the Hood’ with many activities to try!  Many locals and tourists enjoy a number of water sports (Windsurfing, Kiteboarding, SUP Boarding, Kayaking).  After a day on the river, try one of the many local breweries and/or wineries.  The town is full of fantastic restaurants such as 3 Rivers, 6th Street Bistro, Solstice and Celilo.  Hood River has many wonderful seasonal festivals too! Within the City of Hood River their are several different areas, Downtown, the Heights, and Fruit Loop.  The Downtown area is full of shops and historic homes.  The Heights neighborhood is also full of established neighborhoods and home to Jackson Park.  On the Heights, near Horizon School and Rosauers Grocery, is the Eliot Park neighborhood.  The Eliot Park neighborhood will be expanded by several lots in summer of 2014.  There is also the Meadow Lark neighborhood on the Heights adjacent to Westside Elementary.
